Engineering Challenge

A senior care facility, unable to hire additional nursing staff, needed a way for residents to self-administer routine vitals checks and have the results triaged for clinical staff without adding headcount.

ATRI's Role

ATRI performed solution and system architecture, integrated commercial diagnostic hardware, and built the software, cloud, AI/ML, biometric identity and secure healthcare-data architecture. ATRI integrated the diagnostic devices used to capture vitals; it did not design the underlying medical measurement devices themselves.

Engineering Approach

ATRI designed and built a kiosk-based system where residents self-administer vitals checks -- temperature, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation -- using integrated commercial diagnostic devices, several times a day, along with a spoken symptom report.

ATRI implemented biometric authentication (fingerprint and facial recognition) so that every session is verifiably tied to the correct resident.

ATRI built a dedicated, HIPAA-compliant IoT gateway and secure cloud pipeline on AWS IoT Core, replacing a smartphone-app-based approach with a purpose-built device designed for reliability and ease of use in a senior care setting.

ATRI developed AI models that analyze incoming vitals and voice data, flag items needing attention, and draft summary notes for clinical review. Nurses and doctors use that analysis to focus in-person visits where they matter most -- the AI supports and accelerates clinical judgment, it does not diagnose or treat autonomously.

Real-World Considerations

The system was designed around accessibility for an elderly, non-technical user base, and around preserving a clear boundary between AI-assisted triage and the human clinician's actual diagnostic and treatment decisions, which continue to happen face-to-face during scheduled visits.

The facility's identity remains generalized. AI supports clinical review and note drafting only -- diagnosis and treatment remain the responsibility of nurses and doctors, delivered directly with residents.
