Engineering Challenge

An environmental monitoring application required a wireless, cloud-connected sensing platform capable of continuously measuring and transmitting field conditions from a remote industrial site, engineered toward the regulatory pre-compliance standards appropriate for that deployment environment.

ATRI's Role

ATRI developed the prototype hardware and firmware platform, integrated environmental sensing and cellular IoT connectivity, performed hardware bring-up, and prepared FCC pre-compliance and Hazloc gap analysis/pre-compliance testing, along with formal, manual and automated test development.

Engineering Approach

ATRI designed and developed the complete prototype platform on an NXP microcontroller, integrating sensors for gas composition, temperature and barometric pressure.

ATRI integrated NB-IoT/LTE cellular connectivity for real-time data transmission to the cloud, and ported firmware and performed hardware bring-up across the sensor and connectivity subsystems.

ATRI prepared FCC pre-compliance testing, and conducted a gap analysis and pre-compliance testing toward Hazardous Location (Hazloc) requirements relevant to the deployment environment.

ATRI developed a formal test plan spanning unit and functional testing -- a mix of manual and automated methods -- and built a custom automated test utility to accelerate verification.

Real-World Considerations

Reliable operation in a remote, outdoor industrial environment and wireless connectivity from that site were core constraints. Regulatory work at this stage was pre-compliance testing and gap analysis -- a precursor to certification, not certification itself.

ATRI performed Hazloc gap analysis and pre-compliance testing, and FCC pre-compliance testing. This does not represent an achieved Hazloc or FCC certification, and does not imply approval for hazardous-location deployment.
